I passed the Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) exam three months after graduating from Belgium Campus. Here's exactly how I prepared, what worked, and what I'd do differently.
The Mindset Shift
AZ-104 (Administrator) is about how to do things. AZ-305 is about why and when. This is the crucial difference:
- AZ-104: "Create a VM with these specs"
- AZ-305: "Design a solution that handles 10x traffic spikes with minimal cost"
My 3-Month Study Plan
Month 1: Foundation
- Completed Microsoft Learn path for AZ-305
- Built 3 mini-projects implementing key services
- Created architecture diagrams for common scenarios
Month 2: Deep Dive
- Whizlabs practice tests (scored 70%, then 85%, then 95%)
- Case study analysis - read 50+ real-world Azure architectures
- Belgium Campus Cloud 361 notes review
Month 3: Polish
- MeasureUp practice exam until consistently scoring 90%+
- Focused review on weak areas (networking, security)
- Exam scheduling to create urgency
Key Resources
- Microsoft Learn: Free, comprehensive, hands-on labs
- John Savill's AZ-305 course: Best explanation of trade-offs
- Whizlabs: Practice tests that mirror exam format
- Azure Architecture Center: Real patterns and anti-patterns
Exam Day Tips
- Flag uncertain questions and return later
- Case studies first - they set context for other questions
- Look for "most cost-effective" and "minimize administrative effort" keywords
- Trust your Belgium Campus foundation - Cloud 361 covers more than you think
The Result
Scored 875/1000 on first attempt. The combination of hands-on projects (from my portfolio) and structured study was the winning formula. Theory without practice won't cut it for this exam.
